Camp Bestival, our new sister show to the SOLD OUT Bestival festival, is offering up some extreme fun and artistic delights in the form of a superb verbal mash up tent 'The Laughter Library'. This tent is dedicated to the comic and the cultural and will be programmed to the hilt with a plethora of Comic geniuses, Poets, Word activists and world-renowned literary masters of ceremonies. So if you want to be amused, educated or entertained this is the place to hang out and word up!
With quite possibly the most eclectic line-up of top British Comedy talent ever assembled at a UK festival, The Laughter Library will play host to our fantastic ‘Jestival’ line-up, designed to entertain and tickle your fancy. All this plus daily shenanigans with our very own masters of fun The Cuban Brothers who will be leading the Camp Bestival Bluecoats (aka the Lost & Found troops) around the site, mobilizing merriment and monkey business around the best campsite in the world!
Kicking off our weekend of fun on Friday we present a selection of the freshest new UK comedy talent for ‘The Jestival New Faces’ supported by leading comedy website Chortle.co.uk. This includes 'Perrier Award’ winners, 'So You Think You're Funny' winners, 'BBC Act of the Year' winners, Chortle Award winners and 'Hackney Empire New Act' winners - featuring: Carl Donnelly, Matt Reed, Tieran Douieb, Trevor Lock, Saxondale star Andrew O Neill and many more… compeered by the fantastic Silky with Craig Campbell to close the tent.
Picking up the pace on Saturday, not only do we have the most exciting sketch group in the UK - The Pros From Dover, IF. Comedy Award Winner Phil Nichol and the ultimate grand finalist Andrew Maxwell who was nominated for the IF. Comedy Award and is also Channel 4’s ‘King of Comedy’, we also have a eclectic mix of musical, surreal, physical, high & low octane stand-up comedy for your pleasure.
In keeping with the retro feel of Camp Bestival we are delighted to announce the 'King of Deadpan' Roy Walker who will perform a version of his internationally renowned TV Show 'Catchphrase' live on Sunday night. Top comics also joining the Sunday bill include Adam Bloom, Jeff Innocent and Jason John Whitehead to name just a few. And to finish up the weekend of joy is the cherry on top of the proverbial comedy pie, Andrew Maxwell and his cult late night show Full Mooners, starting at midnight on the Sunday night. Come howl at the moon with us – not to be missed!
Also amidst the comic conjecture we’ve got a Spoken Word spectacular line-up for you. This area of The Laughter Library bill will be ably curated by one half of the sharpest act to arrive on the UK scene in 2007 - Essex’s hip-hop maestro Mr Scroobius Pip of dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip fame. The pair provided many people’s musical highlight of last year’s summer festival season, with their razor sharp lyrics set to the coolest Casio beats. Now signed by Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label (and with their debut album out now! – click here for more info) Scroobius Pip has scoured his extensive contacts book to bring us a mouth-watering selection of Spoken Word (& musical) talent at Camp Bestival, from Polar Bear and Poem Inbetween People to Gideon Conn and Peggy Sue & The Pirates.
Pip had this to say about his selection of burgeoning talent: "I’m very very excited to be putting a line up together for this stage. I see it as my opportunity to give more exposure to a load of poets that are, frankly, far better than me but simply unable to grow such a marketable beard. I’ve decided to sling a few music playing types into the mix as well just because it means i get to see them play without having to pay an entrance fee."
And what’s that I hear you ‘bookworms’ say – you’d like to listen to exclusive readings by some of this country’s finest writers too? Well, that’s where The Laughter Library comes up trumps yet again. Where else could you catch exclusive readings and talks by such a diverse set of authors in such chilled-out surroundings? Top of the bill in our Lit line-up is a true national treasure; author of the best-selling Mr Nice and veteran of many a sold-out arena tour, Howard Marks. Some of this country’s hottest authors such as Richard Milward, Joe Stretch, Neil Boorman, Gautam Malkani and Gavin Pretor-Pinney will also be immersing The Laughing Library in a celebration of our greatest writing tradition. Looks like the pen will truly be mightier than the sword in Dorset this summer…
So if you want a weekend powered by laughter as well as intelligent discourse and playful spoken word from some of the greatest and most curious minds currently at large in the UK, Camp Bestival is where it’s at! All this plus Kate Nash, Chuck Berry, Flaming Lips, Billy Bragg, Hercules & Love Affair and some of the hottest new acts around plus DJs Rob da Bank, Andrew Wetherall, DJ Yoda, Gilles Peterson, fancy dress, campfire sessions, farmers markets, Bollywood Cocktails and a generous sprinkle of Bestival magic… you’d be nuts to miss it!
