The Strummerville Foundation is a music charity that aims to provide new opportunities for aspiring musicians. Set up in the memory of the late Clash frontman, Joe Strummer, the charity seeks to reflect his unique contribution to the music world by offering recording time, musical instruments and performance opportunities to young and disadvantaged artists. The charity has already sponsored a rehearsal space in the Roundhouse Studios in Chalk Farm and is currently working towards opening their first dedicated recording space in Bridgwater, Somerset.
Much of Strummerville's work centres on providing support and exposure for unsigned bands. Their website - www.strummerville.com - offers an area for artists to showcase their music and offer free downloads. Strummerville are currently running an unsigned bands competition, Unsigned Heroes, and will shortly be launching a new scheme based in Somerset, offering subsidised recording time for local bands.
Strummerville are famed for their chilled out campfires at the UK's top festivals, which run 24 hours a day and provide some sanctuary away from the festival chaos.
Jo-Jo Evans, Charity Manager says "We're really excited about linking up with Bestival and especially being involved in the first ever Camp Bestival. Strummerville is committed to offering performance opportunities to emerging musicians, whether it's on a big stage playing a warm up slot for a famous band, or playing a few chords around a campfire. Bestival will give us a real opportunity to build on this and we're really looking forward to presenting some great music from some of our favourite well known artists and undiscovered talent."
